Do You Need a Pond to Grow Lotus or Water Lilies?
One of the questions we hear most often is whether you need a large pond to grow these plants.
You don’t necessarily need a huge garden or an elaborate pond. Lotus and some water lilies can be grown in containers, making them possible for people with much smaller growing spaces. Here at Lotus Inthanon we grow most of our aquatic plants in containers.
In this series, we want to help you grow these plants successfully. We’ll show you how to do it using the space and resources you already have.

Growing Aquatic Plants in a Tropical Climate
Our garden is in Northern Thailand, where we grow lotus and water lilies in a warm, tropical environment. We have a distinct rainy season alongside a cooler period during the year.
This gives us a chance to share something unique that general gardening advice often misses. We’ll show you how climate changes the way you grow aquatic plants.
We’ll share what we’re learning about:
- Tropical growing conditions
- Sunlight and heat
- Water temperature
- Rainy and dry seasons
- Tropical water lilies
- Lotus in warm climates
- Growing aquatic plants in containers
- Adapting plant care to your local climate
If you’re growing in a much colder area, many of these basic ideas will still help you. However, your variety selection and seasonal care will look very different.
